How Popular is Silver Jewelry Really?

by otto on October 1, 2009

Over the years all types of metals have been made into jewelry, though some of them can cause dermatology problems, such as green skin or an allergic reaction, silver has continued to be one of the top 5 sellers. Silver jewelry is extremely popular because it is cheaper than gold but still looks beautiful if you purchase the right type. Also, in rare cases does it turn your skin a different color, unless a lesser piece of metal is coated with silver and attempted to be passed off as the real thing. When this happens if you have an allergy to the underlying metal then you are sure to have some type of allergic reaction.
Almost every jewelry store you walk into will have some type of silver product. The most common would be a type of silver chain. Most rings and bracelets are made from gold, but some are made of silver. While most rings do have a 14 or 24 carat gold overlay, the underlying metal could very well possibly be silver. Then, there are some jewelers that work with nothing but silver. It is easy to be mass produced and popular with most citizens’s because it can be priced remarkably lower than gold or other precious metals.

RECESSION AND JEWELERY STORES:

by otto on September 29, 2009

The word in everybody’s mouth as the global crunch continues to bite is recession. In every corner people are worried about the impact of recession on their businesses, and jewelery business is no exception. In the country of Utah, numerous jewelery stores are closing as recession continues to bite. Most of the jewel stores have been shut and others are operating but on minimum sales. James Dixon, the owner of Goldesign Jewelers in Provo is about to join hundreds of those closing their stores. He attributes poor sales to the hard decisions that people have to make regarding what to spend their dwindling cash on, and therefore their buying power has greatly reduced. He will soon be joining the jewelers who are out of business e.g. Brendan Jewelers at University Mall, J.C. Keepsake Diamonds at the Provo Towne Centre and Suncrest Jewelry Co.
There are however some exceptions to this unfortunate trend. Richard Homes, owner of Duke’s Jewelers in Springville, is among the lucky jewelers still in business but he argues that this is mainly because of the nature of his business-resetting old jewels.
Other jewel stores are closing for completely other reasons, e.g. Losee Jewelers which is closing due to the health problems of its co founder.
